incited the people of Nineveh to revolt against his father, who had
offended them by the removal of the Assyrian court to Calah; and he soon
had a following of twenty-seven cities with their respective
governors. His brother, Samas-Rimmon III., however, reduced the
tribes to their allegiance before the death of Shalmaneser II., which took
place soon after. Nothing is known as to the death of Assur-dain-pal. (An
