EADWEARD.  Anglo-Saxon name meaning "rich guard," from Old English ead "happy, rich," and weard "guard, ward," hence "happy guardian." (A Compendious Ang.-Sax. and English Dictionary, Bosworth, 1901).  Some render the name "defender of his property."  Modern English, Edward.  Cf. Eadgard.

... At Ælfred's death his son Eadweard, afterwards distinguished as the Elder, was proclaimed king of the "Anglo-Saxons," a style used by his father in the latter part of his reign. (The Foundations of England, Ramsay, 1898)
