Origin of the name GENTIUS.
Etymology of the name GENTIUS.
Meaning of the baby name GENTIUS.

GENTIUS.  Latinized form of Portuguese Gentio, signifying "a gentile" or "a pagan, a heathen."  This was no doubt the original meaning of Gentius.  But despite the many authors who tell us that Gentius, king of Illyria, gave name to the gentian plant, we seem to have even more telling us that Gentius means "gentian," as if the name was derived from the plant.  Also see Italo-Albanian Genti and its feminine Genta.

... the appellation Gentoos, which the English apply to the Hindoos,... comes from the Portuguese term Gentios, signifying Gentiles or Pagans... (Bibliotheca Classica, Lemprière, 1888)

Gentian, said to be so called from Gentius a King of Illyria who is supposed to have first discovered it, grows in some of the mountainous parts of Switzerland, Hungary, France &c... (The Chemical Works of Caspar Neumann, Lewis, v.2, 1773)
