Origin of the name INGEBJORG.
Etymology of the
Meaning of the baby name INGEBJORG.
Danish and Norwegian. A variant of Old Norse Ingibjörg
(q.v.), meaning "Ing's protection," from Icelandic Ing, the name of an ancient Norse god,
and bjorg "protection."
... Ingebjorg found her way into
an old Saga as a demi-goddess directing wind and rain; but her historical
interest is connected with the unfortunate Danish princess, whom Philippe
Auguste married only to repudiate, and whom French historians translate
into Ingeberge, English ones into
Ingoberga. Hers is the most common
female name in Norway. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
