SVART.  Dutch name, derived from the vocabulary word zwaard, meaning "sword." (Dutch Conversation-Grammar, Valette, 1913).

SVART.  Icelandic name, derived from the vocabulary word svart, meaning "black." (An Icelandic-English Dictionary, Cleasby-Vigfusson, 1874).  Used as a short form of longer Norse names containing svart; for example, Svartkel.

    The first victim was Njál's "house-carle," Svart; Hallgerða's grieve, Kol, at her instigation, slew him while he was hewing wood in a tract of woodland owned in common by Njál and Gunnar.  Bergþóra directed her new house-carle, Atli, to avenge Svart, and forthwith he slew Kol...
