THOERIS (Θουέρις). Another
spelling of Greek Thouéris (q.v.),
a form of Egyptian Ta-ur
"the great" or "the first." An avenging deity of
the Egyptians, and a feminine form of Typhon. She was generally
represented as a hippopotamus, standing erect and holding a knife in her
hands. She lived by devouring the wicked in Hades, and was the
companion to Set. In Egyptian astronomy she was the constellation
Ursa Major of the Greeks and Romans. (An Archaic
