bishop and translator of Scripture, Ulphilas, was born. He
succeeded Theophilus as bishop of the Goths in 348, when he subscribed a
confession rejecting the orthodox creed of Nicæa; through him it is
said that the Goths in general adopted Arianism; it may be, however,
more correct to consider that Arianism (or Semi-Arianism) had already
